Domain names

In my normal day to day job as a web design professional I see many strange, weird and wonderful things. I also see some down right strange, weird and ugly things.

Just this week I have encountered a complete rip off of one of my new clients. I am redeveloping his website for him and it’s almost ready to go live. All I have to do is contact his current ‘website designer’ <— that’s in quotes because I’m being ironic (humorously sarcastic or mocking; “dry humor”) and request he releases the domain to my tag.

He’s replied with a £45 bill for doing the release. Now I realise he’s losing a domain, and I realise that some people do get charged for domain transfer, but come on… £45?

It’s a .com domain so it’s not as straight forward as a .co.uk domain, but even so I think that’s a bit of a rip off last stab attempt to get some money back.

What are your thoughts? Pay or Not Pay for domain release?
